The UN Security Council recently condemned the attacks by the M23 rebel group, supported by Rwanda, in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. According to the UN, the M23 attack against Congolese forces in and around the town of Goma in eastern Congo led to the deaths of thousands of people and more than 700,000 forced to flee their homes since January.
The French ambassador to the UN, Nicolas de Rivière, has called for Congo and Rwanda to return to negotiations without preconditions as an urgent measure to achieve a permanent and peaceful resolution to the conflict. The council unanimously adopted a resolution calling for Rwandan armed forces to stop supporting the rebel group and to immediately withdraw from Congolese territory.
